Bequests and Wills

The most efficient way to make a Planned Gift is to name CHI in your will. No matter how you choose to give, please ask a legal professional to check your Will to ensure it is valid and to give you peace of mind.

There are several types of bequests:

A Specific Bequest

You can make a bequest to CHI for a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your estate.

Sample language for your Will:

I give, devise, and bequeath to Children’s Humanitarian International, P.O. Box 1735, Sebastopol, CA, a California based not-for-profit public benefit corporation, federal tax ID # 27-3280250, the sum of                dollars ($               ) as an unrestricted gift, to be used for such purposes as the Board of Directors of Children’s Humanitarian International shall determine to be the best interest of the organization.

Or, you can make a bequest for specific assets, such as securities, real estate or personal property. Please be as specific as possible in identifying the property.

Sample language for your Will:

I give, devise, and bequeath to Children’s Humanitarian International, P.O. Box 1735, Sebastopol, CA, a California based not-for-profit public benefit corporation, federal tax ID # 27-3280250, my [insert description or identifying information of the asset], and to be used and/or disposed of, as the Board of Directors of Children’s Humanitarian International shall determine to be the best interest of the organization.

A Residuary Bequest

You can make a residuary bequest, which gives all or a portion of the residue of your estate to CHI after payment of expenses and any specific amounts designated to other beneficiaries.

Sample language for your Will:

I give, devise, and bequeath to Children’s Humanitarian International, P.O. Box 1735, Sebastopol, CA, a California based not-for-profit public benefit corporation, federal tax ID # 27-3280250,   X   percent of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate as an unrestricted gift, to be used for such purposes as the Board of Directors of Children’s Humanitarian International shall determine to be the best interest of the organization.

A Contingency Bequest

You can make a contingency bequest to CHI, which allows you to account for a change in your beneficiary’s circumstances.

Sample language for your Will:

I give, devise, and bequeath [insert name]   X   percent of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate if s/he survives me. If [insert name] does not survive me, I give, devise, and bequeath to Children’s Humanitarian International, P.O.

Unrestricted and Restricted Gifts

Gifts that do not restrict CHI’s use (unrestricted gifts) are particularly appreciated by the organization and are of more value as they allow CHI to make certain the resources are directed to where the needs are the greatest.

That being said, CHI is also grateful for gifts that are designated for a specific purpose or program that advances its mission (restricted gifts).

If you are interested in making a restricted gift, it is important that you include the following language to ensure CHI may re-direct the use of your gift if the specified project, program, or purpose ceases to need funds in the future:

Sample language for your Will:

I give, devise, and bequeath to Children’s Humanitarian International, P.O. Box 1735, Sebastopol, CA, a California based not-for-profit public benefit corporation, federal tax ID # 27-3280250, the sum of                dollars ($               ) to be used for the [insert name of CHI’s program or specific purpose] for so long as the Board of Directors of Children’s Humanitarian International determines that the need exists. Should the need no longer exist, the Board of Directors of Children’s Humanitarian International, in its sole discretion, direct the use of my bequest for a purpose related as closely as possible to that stated above.
